I love public art as a non-verbal way to process cultural experiences and connect communities. Several years ago we became the proud owners of a llama topiary who I started dressing up for holidays and current events. Designing unique outfits for “Dolly the Llama” has been a really fun way for me to flex my design and craft skills, thinking about how to represent events in a way that enlivens and supports the community.
What I like most perhaps about Dolly is that she embraces all holidays and experiences with warmth, and she’s become an ambassador to spreading love in the community, much like one of my design favorites, Hello Kitty. She’s a bright spot on people’s walks, and most recently has been a symbol of community support during tough times.
